Yan Chao, style name Duo Yi, from Shandong province. He joined the Army in 1977 and engaged in art creation in the Army. In 1983, he graduated from Department of Fine Arts of Shandong College of Arts. He is Director of Art Institute of College of Art of Xiamen University of Technology, Visiting Professor of University of Regina in Canada, Member of Chinese Artists Association Fujian Branch, Member of Chinese Calligraphers Association Fujian Branch, Assistant Secretary-General of Xiamen Artists Association, Executive Director of Xiamen Calligraphers Association and Distinguished Painter of Xiamen Academy of Painting.

He has loved painting since childhood. Over tens of years he has never stopped painting. He also devotes himself to art creation while he is busy with his art education in the university. In 1989 he held solo painting and calligraphy exhibitions in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Beijing, Shandong, Guangdong, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Shaoguan, Heifei, Sanya, Tianjin and Shijiazhuang in succession. His works have been highly praised by experts. TVs in Taiwan and Hong Kong also have had special reports on his exhibitions. His works have been selected for major painting and calligraphy exhibitions in domestic and abroad and won awards for many times.

Many painting and calligraphy works have been collected by Great Hall of the People, Military Museum, provincial and municipal art museums. Many works have been presented to international friends by governments as precious gifts.

In 1996 he was invited to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan and Canada to hold exhibitions and give lectures. He has also been employed as Honorary Professor by many foreign universities and colleges.
